Redefining an e-bike brand around the freedom, creativity, and wellness
Overview
Zugo had a product people noticed. Its e-bikes were fast, durable and distinctly styled, built for more than the daily commute. What the brand lacked was not energy, but a shared language for expressing it. Its website, emails, social content, merchandise and packaging needed to feel like parts of the same system.
The brief appeared visual: define a clearer brand direction and create a guide the team could follow. Discovery revealed a deeper problem. Before Zugo could look consistent, it needed to decide what every expression of the brand should mean.
Challenge
Zugo could credibly talk about innovation, family, freedom, wellness, performance, creativity, and community. But without a hierarchy, those truths competed. A premium product story could become another specification sheet. A community story could become warm but generic. The brand needed a center strong enough to connect both the machine and the life around it.
The audit also showed that the existing bolt icon was not the problem. It already conveyed energy, movement and forward momentum. Rather than replace a recognizable asset, I focused on building a clearer strategy, message and visual system around it.
The Insight
Customer profiling moved the conversation beyond speed, range and components. Existing customers wanted time away, more fun and a new way to experience movement. Aspirational advocates wanted a product they could believe in, share and build a community around. Their desired outcomes differed, but the bike played the same role for all of them: it made something else possible.
The e-bike was not the destination. It was the enabler.
The Strategy
The workshop distilled the brand into six attributes. Together, they became the strategic filter for every verbal and visual decision that followed.
Culture - Tribe/Family
Customer - Quality Driven
Voice - Supportive
Feeling - Empowered
Impact - Wellness
X-Factor - Innovative
Together, these attributes led to “Electric Enabler”—a positioning idea that moved Zugo beyond the language of specifications and toward the value each ride could create. The bike was the product. Freedom, confidence, wellness and connection were what it enabled.
Stylescape 1
Quality Driven
Quality Driven presented Zugo as a mature, technically assured brand. Restrained layouts, premium typography and detailed product imagery placed performance and build quality at the center. It was the most sophisticated route—but also the most conventional.
Mature and sophisticated, focused on the finer technical details.
Stylescape 2
Kinetic Electric
Kinetic Electric was the most expressive route: bold color, oversized typography and references drawn from different eras of design. It embraced the Creator archetype and positioned Zugo as a brand for riders who wanted to be seen, not merely transported.
Bold and unapologetic, it gave the brand a recognizable attitude without losing the bike’s performance credentials.
Inspired by different decades of design, culminating in a stylescape that feels modern yet nostalgic.
Stylescape 3
Ride Inspired
Ride Inspired was the broadest and most accessible route. Rider-led photography and a flexible color system made it positive, inclusive and easy to deploy. That ease was also its weakness: it could remain consistent, but it was less likely to stand apart.
Ease of execution can be a double edge sword, consistency will not be that difficult, but standing out will.
Design Outcome
Zugo chose Kinetic Electric, the boldest of the three directions.
The existing bolt remained at the center, supported by an electric purple-to-pink palette, extended typography, high-contrast rider photography and flexible graphic layouts. Together, these elements gave Zugo a coherent visual language that could move from technical product communication to culture, community and everyday life.
Innovation still mattered, but it was no longer an isolated product claim. Family, wellness, creativity and community could now coexist because each answered the same question: What can this ride enable?
Impact
The redefined brand system gave Zugo:
a cohesive identity across key touchpoints;
clearer language for communicating beyond product specifications; and
a more useful understanding of its audience and the role the bike played in everyday life.
The focus shifted from what the bike was to what it made possible. Zugo could now present itself not simply as an e-bike manufacturer, but as a partner in movement, independence and everyday life.
Iteration Notes
This project reinforced a lesson that still shapes my work: a rebrand does not always require a new symbol. Sometimes the more valuable decision is knowing what to keep—and building a clearer system around it.
The strategic breakthrough was not the gradient or the typography. It was defining the role Zugo played in the rider’s life. Before “Electric Enabler,” the brand had several good ideas competing for attention. After it, those ideas had somewhere to belong.
I would make the final guide shorter today. At the time, I treated comprehensiveness as proof of clarity. I now see clarity as the result of harder subtraction: fewer rules, better examples and every specification checked twice.
