Building a Modern Identity for the Next Generation of Interior Designers
Overview
A rebrand for the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers (PIID), aimed at modernizing its visual identity and repositioning the organization as a progressive force within the design industry. The project was created for licensed interior designers across the Philippines, as well as partners and institutions connected to the broader design community. I served as Art Director at the branding agency leading the project, where I developed the design direction and built a flexible visual identity system to support PIID’s evolving initiatives.
Challenge
The Philippine Institute of Interior Designers has played a central role in advancing the interior design profession in the Philippines for decades. As the organization representing licensed interior designers nationwide, it serves as a platform for professional development, collaboration, and industry advocacy.
However, its visual identity no longer reflected the evolving energy of the design community. Like many professional institutions, the brand had gradually become conservative over time. While it communicated credibility, it struggled to capture the creativity and forward-thinking nature of the design profession.
The challenge was to create an identity that could maintain institutional authority while expressing the progressive spirit of contemporary design.
The Insight
Interior design is fundamentally about structure, composition, and the intentional organization of space.
Rather than designing a static logo, the opportunity was to build a visual system inspired by those same principles—one that is modular, flexible, and capable of shaping multiple visual expressions.
By treating the identity as a system rather than a single mark, the brand could evolve alongside the organization and support the many programs, events, and initiatives that PIID organizes throughout the year.
The Strategy
The identity was built around a modular design system derived directly from the PIID symbol.
The geometric structure of the logo serves as the building block of the entire brand language. Its modular components can expand into patterns, graphic compositions, and layout structures used across communications.
This approach transforms the logo from a static mark into a flexible visual framework capable of supporting a wide range of applications.
Bold color blocks, strong typographic hierarchy, and structured layouts reinforce the architectural quality of the system, reflecting the spatial thinking that defines interior design.
The identity also allows for the thoughtful integration of Filipino cultural elements—such as textile patterns and Baybayin script—used selectively to highlight national identity while maintaining a contemporary visual language.
Design Outcome
The result is a modern identity system that positions PIID as a confident and forward-looking design institution.
Because the brand is built as a modular framework, it can adapt across a wide range of applications—from conferences and exhibitions to educational programs, digital platforms, and institutional communications.
The system balances structure and expression, reflecting the dual nature of interior design as both a technical discipline and a creative practice.
Impact
The introduction of the new design system allowed PIID to establish a more cohesive and recognizable brand presence across its various touchpoints.
From social media communications to event promotions and digital platforms, the modular framework helped maintain visual consistency while allowing the organization to adapt the brand across different initiatives.
More importantly, the identity helped communicate a renewed sense of energy and relevance—positioning PIID as a contemporary institution that reflects the evolving design community it represents.
Iteration Notes
One of the key lessons from this project was the importance of advocating for a direction that reflects where an organization wants to go, not just where it has been.
Professional institutions often gravitate toward safer visual solutions in an effort to appear credible. However, standing out sometimes requires embracing a more confident approach.
By building a structured yet expressive system, the identity demonstrates that credibility and creativity can coexist—and that a strong brand can help an organization move forward with clarity and purpose.
